Alytus regional recreation centre was established in 1945. First strong flash was S.Kymantaitės-Čiurlionienės comedy Pinigėliai (Money), with what was started gloriuos history of Alytus folk theatre in 1946. Dancers, singers, reciters started to gather here. For a long years land was glorified by deserving amateur collectives: country band Dzūkija, folk dance group Dziemedėlis, agitation brigade (shaft and humour group) Sprigtas and more others. With golden letters to the history of district and city cultural history were written names of Janina and Valentinas Kirliai, Domininkas Dabriška, Vytautas Radavičius, Natalija Ražanauskienė and others great workers. Thanks to them, for a half of a century Recreation centre of Alytus region was one of the best in the country.
In 1992 district recreation centre was evicted to the ourdays lodgment and reorganized to Cultural centre of Alytus Region municipality.

In cultural institutions of Alytus district works 169 art amateur collectives (70 from them are children collectives), which has 1565 members.
About 1300 variuos genre events are organized per year.
In district club institutions are lended those facilities: professional and amateur art concerts, cultural events, leisure evenings and discoteques, seminars, lectures and other.
